Scalp Micropigment Removal (SMP) in Clearwater, FL

SMP Scalp Micropigmentation Removal

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) can sometimes fade unevenly, appear too dark, or no longer match your personal style. When that happens, removal is the first step toward a fresh start.

At Tampa Bay Tattoo Removal, we use advanced laser technology to safely and effectively target SMP pigment without damaging the surrounding skin. Lasers break down the pigment particles, which are then naturally removed by your body’s immune system. This method is considered the most precise and effective way to clear SMP.

While alternative options like saline removal or dermabrasion exist, they are slower, less predictable, and more irritating to the skin. Laser removal remains the gold standard.

What to Expect: Sessions & Healing

On average, SMP removal requires 3–6 sessions for full clearance, depending on pigment density, depth, and how your skin responds. In some cases where tattoo ink was used instead of SMP pigment, additional sessions may be required.

  • During treatment: You’ll feel a series of quick snaps on the skin as the laser shatters pigment particles. We use cryo-cooling throughout treatment to minimize discomfort and protect the skin.
  • Treatment spacing: To protect your skin and allow the body time to process pigment, we schedule a minimum of 6 weeks between sessions.

Aftercare Post-Removal

Proper aftercare is essential to protect your scalp and prepare for future SMP:

  • Keep the area clean and lightly moisturized.
  • Avoid direct sun (throughout treatment), swimming, saunas, or heavy sweating until fully healed (5 days after treatment).
  • Do not pick or scratch the treated area.
  • Use SPF once the scalp has healed to prevent pigment changes.

FAQs About SMP Removal

Does SMP removal hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as quick snaps against the skin. Our cryo-cooling system helps numb the area and reduce discomfort throughout the procedure.

Pain Management Tips:

  • Apply numbing cream (Lidocaine 4% or higher) approximately 45 minutes before your appointment. Make sure to cover the area well and wrap it with plastic wrap if instructed.
  • Take over-the-counter acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) 45 minutes prior to your session to help reduce discomfort. Please avoid ibuprofen or aspirin before your appointment, as these may increase the risk of bruising.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as they can increase sensitivity.

How many sessions will I need?

The clinical average is 3–6 sessions, though the exact number depends on pigment density, depth, skin type, and whether tattoo ink was used instead of SMP pigment.

How long do I have to wait between treatments?

We schedule a minimum of 6 weeks between sessions to allow the skin to heal fully and for your body to process the broken-down pigment.

Will SMP removal damage my hair follicles?

No. Our laser targets only pigment particles in the scalp and does not harm surrounding hair follicles. In fact, many clients grow hair back normally in the treated area.

Can all colors of SMP pigment be removed?

Yes, most SMP pigments respond well to laser treatment. Darker shades typically fade fastest, while lighter pigments may require additional sessions.

When can I start new SMP after removal?

After completing your removal treatments and allowing your scalp to fully heal, you can begin planning for your new SMP. We recommend waiting at least 3 months after your final session before starting fresh SMP, as the pigment continues to break down and fade during this time.
